Versioned Workflows a True Story

As a long time GIS trainer working for Esri Australia, I have taught a lot of courses over the past 10 or so years. In my opinion, one of the best would have to be Implementing Versioned Workflows in a Multiuser Geodatabase. A three day course designed to cover the version related content in Esri’s current course curriculum.

I know the title sounds a little intimidating and I will not lie, some of the content is quite advanced.

However the way topics are introduced and explained visually, the continuity between the scenarios and the way we are taken on exploratory journey through the repository of the multiuser geodatabase leave students with a thorough understanding of its mechanics.

Forgetting that the scenarios are based in and around Fargo, North Dakota, the course progressively and comprehensively takes the students through a number of various real life workflows exposing how the functionality provided in a geodatabase has been implemented. After students perform functions from ArcMap as a user they then explore the changes to the SDE repository as an administrator.

After sitting this course for the first time not only did I walk away with a better understanding of alternative methods of implementing a multiuser geodatabase, but also the impact of the various approaches including the advantages and disadvantages of each.

The next Implementing Versioned Workflows in a Multiuser Geodatabase will be in Brisbane on the 8-10/3/2016.

Tips for Mapinfo users transitioning to ArcMap

As a Mapinfo Professional trained user starting ArcMap for the first time I was comforted by the presence of some familiar looking buttons for map navigation and standard functions like saving and printing.

However as soon as I tried to open a layer for the first time this is where things started to feel a little less familiar. Being used to opening a Tab file from the File menu and expecting to do the same with a Shape file I found this was not the case. The solution is to use the Catalog window typically docked on the right hand side. Having gotten used to the Catalog which is basically an explorer window where one can drag and drop files into the ‘Map Window, sorry ‘Data Frame’. Continue reading

Publishing Spatial views as a Feature Access Service

Publishing Spatial views as a Feature Access Service

The following Blog will take you through the process of using ArcMap 10.x to publish a spatial view as a Feature Access service.

What is a database view?

Database views are database elements that store SQL query statements that act like tables.

viewViews can be used to join tables together, similar to joins in ArcMap. But because the view is stored in the database, it can be used by many users in many map documents. For example, frequently Census data is stored in a table separate from the Census geographies feature class. Using a view, all users given access will be able to create analytical maps based on Census data without having to create a join. Continue reading
