ArcSDE 10 Geodatabase upgrade process

Planning to upgrade your ArcSDE 9.2 or 9.3 / 9.3.1 to ArcSDE 10.0? Beginning with ArcGIS 10.0, ArcSDE geodatabase upgrades must be performed using the Upgrade Geodatabase tool or Python script. The ArcSDE Post Installation wizard (Repository setup) on Windows or the sdesetup command to upgrade the geodatabase is no longer applicable to upgrade the ArcSDE geodatabase. If you do, you will receive a message indicating the geodatabase already exists and the upgrade will not run.

If you upgrading your existing ArcSDE geodatabase, the new Upgrade Geodatabase tool is the first process to perform before authorizing the software and re-creating any existing/new ArcSDE services.

Upgrading your geodatabase is now performed within ArcCatalog.

The Upgrade Geodatabase (Data Management) Tool can be accessed in ArcCatalog via the Database Properties of a database connection under the General tab > Upgrade Status or via ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Database > Upgrade Geodatabase.

In order to upgrade the ArcSDE geodatabase via the Upgrade Geodatabase tool, a successful direct connection is necessary as the ‘Input Geodatabase’.

For example:

Please note: If your geodatabase is at a lower release (such as 9.1 or 9.0), you must first upgrade to a supported release, then upgrade to 10.
